Pros and Cons of Breastfeeding vs Formula

During this infant formula shortage, a common question we hear is what are the pros and cons of breastfeeding?

Many leading organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) say breastfeeding is the best choice for babies

“The AAP reaffirms its recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for 1 year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant.”

You do have to take into account that sometimes breastfeeding isn’t possible due to low milk supply or baby latching issues. In cases like these many moms seek help from a lactation consultant which can have high costs, but are usually well worth it. When lactation consulting doesn’t work, moms have no real choice but to use formula.

The main reason why leading organizations and doctors recommend breastfeeding over formula is that infant and maternal health outcomes tend to be better with breastfeeding.

For example, there is a 40% lower risk of Asthma and a 24% lower risk of obesity with breastfeeding over formula.
